Education Seminar & Networking Function

Join AICLA Tasmania for our first event of the year!

Our guest speakers will discuss key aspects of fire investigation and liability:

Craig Maxwell – Fire Scene Examiner, Pyrrhus Pty Ltd

•  The role of an FSE
•  The importance of preserving the scene
•  Terminology – what do the words mean?
•  Fire language – what does it suggest?

Nicholas Lamanna – Mechatronics Engineer & Fire Investigator, ATTAR

Nicholas specialises in forensic failure analysis of fires involving vehicles, commercial electrical equipment, consumer appliances, and batteries. He holds a Bachelor of Mechatronics Engineering (Hons) and a Bachelor of Science from Monash University and applies the scientific method to complex fire and electrical failure investigations. Nicholas has delivered investigation findings to equipment owners, lawyers, loss adjusters and insurers, and his recent work includes determining ignition sources in vehicle fires, electronic devices, and complex battery related incidents.

The focus of Nicholas’ address will be the follow on from the FSE’s involvement, and a Forensic Engineer’s analysis with a view of establishing the potential for recovery.

Alison Hay – Principal, Barry Nilsson Lawyers

Good Practice of Managing Recovery Prospects Following a Fire

Alison is a Principal with Barry Nilsson, providing professional legal advice for the insurance industry in Tasmania and nationally. With over 25 years of experience in insurance law, Alison has extensive expertise in managing property damage claims.

She has advised insurers on coverage for fraudulent insurance claims post the deliberate destruction of property by fire, denied claims on basis of fraud, assisted criminal investigation and prosecutions of fire bugs, sought damages in criminal prosecutions for insurance companies, worked with investigators as to cause, defended recovery claims against manufacturers of appliances (for example) and commenced recovery actions against manufacturers and contractors responsible for fire damage.

When not putting out fires, Alison deals mostly with construction and commercial disputes. She is known for her practical, strategic, and commercially focused legal advice, as well as her ability to navigate complex litigation while building strong client relationships.

Holding degrees in Science and Law, with majors in chemistry and biochemistry, Alison brings a unique analytical approach to her legal practice. Passionate about litigation and the opportunity to learn from other industries, she is an invaluable voice in the field.
